Know Your Audience

Before you begin writing, know who your audience is and what they’re looking for instead of taking guesses about what they’d like to hear.

Make data-driven decisions by conducting industry research and competitor analysis. This isn’t as complicated as it sounds. Some resources you can use to do his include:

  • KeywordTool.io: This free tool is used to see some of the most popular keywords searched by users in each industry.
  • Twitter Advanced Search: Type a keyword and select the filter “questions” and you’ll be able to see some questions that people in your industry are asking.
  • Quora: A good website to determine questions people in your industry are asking.
  • SEMRush: This is a paid tool but it’s extremely useful and allows you to look at what your competitors are doing.

Summary Graphics for Each Header

Include enticing headers that directly relate to what your audience is looking for. Optimize your blog by including H2 and H3 headings for people that skim. All it takes is a few simple words to grab the attention of your reader and encourage them to delve further into your content.

Although that’s helpful, don’t stop there! Include infographics throughout your blog to summarize the key points of the article. Striking visuals will influence skimmers to come back to you when they’re looking for easy and fast information.

Short & Simple Intro Paragraphs

Don’t get too carried away with your intro paragraph. Make it short and sweet! Several intros feel like they are their own main section of the article. Since people often skim, you have to remember that they’re likely skimming the intro first. If your intro is very long, they will probably know what to expect and won’t jump straight into the next heading.

Instead of writing a detailed intro, use this simple strategy: first address the problem, show why it’s important and provide a relevant solution. A simple intro will only take readers minutes to read, plus give them exactly what they want to hear. Give your reader a reason to stick to your article and show them why it’ll be valuable.

Short Paragraphs

When writing paragraphs under each subheading, try your best to make sure that they’re no more than approximately 4 lines of text, unless something really needs a longer explanation. This way, readers can absorb the information in the shortest amount of time possible.

Blog posts are designed to give highly focused, quality information in a short amount of time. Your audience isn’t sitting down to read a book. They want fast answers!

Bullet Points

Prior to reading blogs, people tend to skim them to see how long they are and what the blog will be highlighting. This is the best way for readers to see if your post is worth their time.

Subheadings and short paragraphs are a good start in making your blog easier to read, however you should take it a step further by including bullet points.

How to write bullet points:

  • Explain clear benefits in as minimal text as possible
  • Keep each bullet point 1-2 lines each at most
  • Avoid clutter, don’t write bullet point paragraphs
  • Remind yourself that bullets are not sentences

Optimize Blog for SEO

Google organic searches are one of the main ways to drive traffic to your website. Maximize your SEO ranking with some of these tips:

  • Use an effective meta title
  • Use an effective meta description
  • Optimize for focused keywords
  • Use variations of focused keywords
  • Add alt-text to your images
  • Embed internal links throughout the blog, from other content

Include Clear Call-to-Action

A clear call-to-action is probably the best way to end your blog! Ask your readers to leave a comment, contact you, share your post, follow you on social media, or tell them to revisit your site again for more information. This way, your user is engaged and can provide you with feedback on your content.
