The Importance of Content in SEO

Most people today, ask themselves why content is important for search engine optimization. Well, content is what makes your website unique and what makes visitors return for more because of what you have to share. Once upon a time, if you wanted to increase your SEO rankings, all you had to do was stuff your website with keywords and eventually that would generate traffic to your website.

This technique was mostly used in website full of ads that only cared about the hits and not returning visitors. Of course this only lasted awhile, and eventually Google released a new algorithm that prevented this from happening. Since than, there have been many changes that penalized websites and knocked them down to the bottom of Google’s rankings.

Today, SEO isn’t just for the average person who thinks they can bring up their website with these techniques. Respectable businesses are learning that writing unique content for their products and services is what will drive traffic to their website. You will find online in many articles the saying “Content is King”, and it’s very true. There are two important factors in web content writing:

1. Quality
This means that your content should be well written, free from grammatical errors and embarrassing typos (except the ones you encounter here 🙂 so that your visitors don’t begin to think if you really know what you are talking about. However, you also have to keep in mind that it should be rich in keywords in an informative and interesting way. This way your visitors feels like they have learned something new about the topic. This is what we call quality content.

2. Quantity
Quantity, instead means that your content should be updated regularly with new content. You want your visitors to return regularly. If your visitors begin to notice that your content is starting to become stale, there will be no reason for them to return.

Most people mistake this factor, for lengthy content on their website, thinking that the more they have the more SEO-optimized their website will be. In this case it could work against you, as most people spend a few seconds on a webpage in order to keep browsing through your site. One turn off is long content hard to read, if they come across that, you have definitely lost that visitor.

How often should you add content to your website?

This depends on the website and the industry that you are in. If your website is a blog, well you should definitely update it often, even twice a day depending your niche. If you run an e-commerce store maybe once or twice a week, by adding or remove products, launching new ones, or creating new promotions that keep your store from becoming stale.

If your website is just a straight up informative website, than try to update it 2 or 3 times a month. Keep a routine going just so that you don’t make drastic changes every month for example. Making a lot of changes in one shot will not help you achieve the rankings you are looking for.
